This place was, first of all, very hard to find. Google Maps has it all wrong - but it's basically located behind Clairemont Town Square off of Clairemont Drive past the bike shop at Clairemont Mesa Blvd. By all outward appearances, once we finally found it, we were pleasantly surprised. It looked cozy and quaint, with a modern sort of feel. But once you walk in the door, it got a little questionable. The bottom floor was empty, maybe used just for large parties? There are chairs strewn sort of everywhere and there is a host station with a wrinkled red tablecloth thrown on it. No one is acting as host down there, just a sign that says "Come on Upstairs!". Not very inviting, if you ask me. We walked up the stairs and were seated relatively quickly by a server who looked overworked and in a hurry. She was nice enough, though. Shortly afterward, another server gave us menus and asked for our drink order. We looked over the extensive, sort of overwhelming menu and ordered a beer from the nice beer options. She came back saying that the last of that beer was just sold. We ordered a different beer and that one was not available either. She then tells us that only two of the beers on the menu (of those that are in stock, I assume) were cold. The manager (I think that's who he was) finally peele himself away from leaning over the bar and talking with his friend, and brought us a different beer "on the house". It was an IPA - we hate IPA. He didn't bother asking us what we liked. No one bothered to ask us if we'd been there before, so we had to decipher the huge menu ourselves. After a good 30 minutes, we were asked for our orders. Another 45 minutes to an hour later, our food came. I ordered a 3/4 lb. burger with mix-ins of fresh roasted garlic, artichoke hearts and fresh yellow tomatoes, with no bun and onion rings. My burger was burnt, tough, came with a bun and had no trace of artichoke hearts or yellow tomato. I could sort of taste the garlic. The onion rings tasted like they were cooked in oil from three days ago. All of our meals were cold. My son ordered mac 'n' cheese from the kids menu. That might have been the best thing on our table. But still, not good enough for a take-out box. For charging $5.99 for kids mac 'n' cheese, $14.99 for mac 'n' cheese (adult style) and$9.99 to $11.99 for burgers, these people have their nerve making patrons wait so long and deliver such mediocre food. We were so unsatisfied! I had invited my whole family plus my sister and brother-in-law. We were so excited for the whole experience of mix-ins and such! We were so let down and hungry by the time we were done. We arrived at 6:30pm and didn't leave until 8:00pm. Eating time was less than 15 minutes, since we were so grossed out by it all. We had waited so long for our food, we didn't dare ask to have it remade. The manager was walking around asking other tables of people who he clearly already knew how their food was. The table next to us were return customers who were very unsatisfied also. Their server (the lady who seated us) asked how things were and why their plates were still full. They mentioned that their mac 'n' cheese was not to par and she took it off their bill. The manager eyed our table, but never once came to ask how things were for us. How the beer was, how the food was - nothing! What a major let-down! Do not go here!! I don't know who was cooking, but I couldn't done better with frozen Ore-Ida onion rings and Costco burgers!!

Lots of mouth watering flavor and I like the super fast way they get the food out to you, without feeling hurried. More accurately, I think I should say that the food comes out in successions, at the perfect timing.

Everyone is right- this place really does have the best burgers. I'm giving it 4 stars overall, although I would give the food 5 stars. I deducted one star because of the wait and the fact that the staff isn't always organized. But the food is excellent. Juicy delicious burgers, and I always love to try the different beers. What could be better than a burger and a beer? Maybe topping it all off with a strawberry peach cheesecake - doesn't get any better than that.
Excellent burgers. Highly recommend.
As soon as I walk into the restaurant the owners made me feel special. I was seated right away and I ask for the waiter recommendation was of the restaurants special burger. It was by far the best gourment burger I ever had. They also have a full sports bar. I recommend this restaurant to all my family and friends.

I am a burger fan and have frequented all the hot spots such as Peabody's, Hodad's, and Rocky's. They are all great burgers, but Boomerangs has them all beat. The quality of the meat was excellent, very flavorful and juicy and seasoned and seared like a prime steak. They offer a long list of mix-in ingredients (e.g., bacon, jalapenos, horseradish, garlic with many others), an excellent selection of cheeses, and a bounty of sauces. The garlic fries and chile-rubbed onion rings were excellent. They also have a nice selection of micro-brewed beers and happy hour specials. The price at approx. $10 for burger and fries, was reasonable based on the quality. Overall, this has become my #1 burger stop in San Diego.
This place is great. You can pick the size of your burger and get almost anything mixed into the meat before it's cooked. End result is nothing short of AWESOME! Love their habanero ketchup. Bruce and Jose are great hosts. Best burgers in town hands down.

I held my own burger contest a couple of years ago by visiting as many of the reigning burger joints as I could. Truly, Boomerangs would not quite hold up. While reviews conveyed the general friendly conviviality of the owners and food quality, the final product did not quite rank up there with Rocky's (my favorite), Waterfront (lacking atmosphere), or Hodad's. My burger was without "mix-ins" so I could taste the beef. Bun was MUCH too large for the precooked 1/3 lb weight, which = lots of fat. Some is good for flavor, but when the bun is twice the size of the medium cooked (asked for med. rare) patty, then there is way too much. Kids' burgers much worse; smaller patty, same HUGE bun. Silly when they have sliders and could easily make the bun switch for a kid's patty. Extra sauce only showed on the bill, not on the plate. Garlic fries touted by server as "not too greasy" were definitely soaked. Decor was heavy on fluorescent lighting and a weird green color. Not warm or cozy at all. Boxing on every TV? Meat quality was good; lettuce, tom, onion very fresh. LOTS of pickles, yay! Good choice of sides, but a lot of oil in my choice of grilled veggies. Very friendly to kids and our service was good. Wine list (I know, what was I thinking) was better than Sammy's Pizza or Red Robin. Bottom line: great that the burgers are cooked to order, but there are way too many extraneous calories lurking for little flavor benefit. Get another cable box so you can show basketball or some other sport at the same time.

My family and I take all of our visitors to Boomerangs Gourmet Burger Joint to "show off" the best burgers that San Diego has to offer. We've been patronizing Boomerangs for about a year now after seeing a glowing review of their gourmet burgers in Family magazine. People expecting thin patties with pedestrian toppings and one-size-fits-all sides slapped down in front of them in less than five minutes need to visit the neighboring fast-food places: Boomerangs ISN'T fast food. Boomerangs is a restaurant specializing in "hand-cut" and "home-made" and "chef-quality." Boomerangs uses recipes, not posters with pictures of patties and pickles. I love that it takes a half hour for my burger to be mixed and cooked (Make mine medium-rare!). The sides are truly stellar like the macaroni and cheese, the twice-baked potatoes, and some amazingly delicious sweet potato fries (I have to guard my plate to keep the others at my table from pilfering them). Sauces are creative and novel; and suggestions of other combinations are met with enthusiasm from Bruce and Jose. I'd love to see Boomerangs Gourmet Burger Joint catch on with a wider client base, but selfishly, I'm always thrilled that I can walk in at anytime and get a table. I have noticed that the added publicity through television interviews has filled the place in recent visits and I couldn't be happier. The added business has caused employees to be hired and has taken some of the pressure off the owners who tended to do everything by themselves making themselves rather harried. More clients is good for us! When you visit, give the corn chowder (my dad's absolute favorite) or the home-made chili a try: They're both terrific. And if you're a vegetarian, there is a TREMENDOUS portobello mushroom "burger" that my dad orders every time. Boomerangs is a winner and worth checking out. There's a reason why their restaurant is called Boomerangs ... You'll be back ... And I'll be there, too!

I have been going to this place since the day they opened. I go for the cold beer (Moose Drool), GREAT Burgers, and friendly service. I have been to this place over 50 times and could not get enough. A fast food burger could be made in 3 minutes, a Boomerangs Burger is made in 15min. You get what you pay for and it is well worth the wait. If you are in a hurry to eat buy an appitizer and a cold beer. GREAT BURGER JOINT!!!!

Went here with a buddy. AMAZING BURGER It's now my "best burger" place to take people when I play host. You can cook it how you want without fear of ecoli. (they told me this, owner is very chatty) Bun is from local bakery. Menu is super customizable. If you want a specific burger you can make it. (dunno if they have chili) You get 3 free "mix-ins" from a big list of stuff (bacon, onion, artichoke, etc.), and these are little bits they mix in the meat before cooking. But the mix-ins are more of a subtle taste in my experience. If you want something like bacon then add it (at a cost) from toppings. (their bacon is very tasty) Don't blame me if you think the mix-ins will be enough, and then find out you didn't even really notice em. Sides are hitt-n-miss. Service can be VERY slow. If you are on the clock it could spoil your experience so be aware. Owner is a good guy who takes a personal interest in his guests and his passion for burgers. (I go infrequently but he recognizes me and always says hello) Location is hard to find. (across from a strip mall, tucked in the back of a nondescript building complex) Atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant (my brother liked the deco paintings) and includes a bar/tv area. So with all I've said you may ask how can I give it 5 stars? CAUSE IT'S THE B-E-S-T BURGER. Remember "soup na2i" from Seinfeld? How even though it was traumatic, people still went cause the soup was just that good? Well Boomerangs burger is THAT GOOD. There is only 1 "best burger" and this is it, so you give it 5. Be ready for a delay to your food, maybe an order mix up, and sides that may not do it for you. Pay extra to make the burger you want. And if you can stay cool after all that, you will be set to enjoy THE BEST BURGER IN SAN DIEGO.

My wife and I saw the artical in San Diego Magazine and decided to try them tonight (4:30 pm) - Always looking for a good place to eat that is not "Corporate" in Clairemont. Was sorely disappointed - service was very slow - only a hand full of patrons there at the time - burger was ok - to be honest Fudruckers is far tastier. Cheese was so over cooked it appeared almost opaque and very thin - Garlic fries were soggy and not too much flavor - Sad to say that the Petco Park garlic fries beat them big time. Burger was just average and not really worth the $10.00. Unlikely to go back - sorry.

This is my new "go to" place. the food was great, all freashly made and worth the wait. There are almost too many choices, they need to make a recommendation list on the menu. You can choose three mix ins iwth toppings, gourmet cheeses and sauces to die for it hard to get through the menu and make a choice (all good problems to have) Great place to bring kids. WIth the books, crayons and since we were the first ones there they even turned the disney channel on for us. I will be recommending this place to everyone. the service was awesome.

I was reluctant to check this place out b/c I was tired, didn't want to drive to Claremont just for a burger, and frankly, just sick of burgers. My friends said they had heard great things about this place so I finally said ok, and my husband, 5 year old daughter, and myself went with our friends. Up the stairs was a table covered with crayons, coloring books, and reading books (all clean, nice, new) to keep the kids busy. I couldn't believe how very friendly, and professional, our servers were. We never once had to ask for anything, they were very attentive. I have never seen such an awesome menu for burgers! A half lb burger (I don't think they even have 1/4 pd...) is $8.99. This includes 3 items that you can choose from a lengthy list of "mix-ins", meaning you can have them mix into your burger patty before cooking it items like sun dried tomatoes, red onions, bacon, roasted red peppers, and the list goes on. Then you choose your cheese out of like 12 different cheeses. Then they have more different spreads to choose from like pesto, etc. I chose the chili pepper mayo which was awesome. Then you get your choice of sides: mashed potatoes that are like a baked potato w/all the fixings, steak fries, or homemade onion rings, homemade potato chips, etc. I had the onion rings and they were the best I've ever had. My friends ordered the cheese sticks and when the menu said " a wall of cheese" they really meant it. Those were the best, biggest cheesesticks I've ever had. The potato skins were to die for! Just amazing, yummy good food. Full bar. They have a kids menu, and for $4.29 and $5.29 kids can get chs burger, mini corn dogs, chkn strips, and fries and a drink. Big portions for kids, too! Servers were sweet to the kids as well. Different, the place a bit eclectic. Very enjoyable experience all around. Huge portions/servings. Extremely tasty food, best burgers we've ever had. Definitely GOURMET! We will DEFINITELY be back! Thank you Jose and staff!

I have been back to this neighborhood spot about 10 times. Each time hoping against hope that they will get their act together. Like one of the other reviews, I wanted so badly for this place to be great. We just don't have very many eateries in Clairemont. The last time I was there we waited over 45 minutes for over cooked burgers. Everytime I am there they ask me how I want my burger cooked and no matter what I say it comes to me WELL done - not the medium that I asked for. The service is poor even when the restaurant is slow. The owners are very nice and friendly, but, unfortunately, that was the last try. We won't be back.

Boomerangs... This place is more than just a burger joint, it's a state of mind...and that's before you've sampled a few 22oz attitude adjusters. How anyone could eat here, drink here, and invest a measured amount of their life here ( solo or with family/friends ) and NOT have a transcendent experience is beyond me. I've been stopping by regularly since Bruce and Jose opened this restaurant and I've waited this long to comment as I needed to gather a large enough data set ( and I have come to this startling conclusion... ) Not every visit to Boomerangs is going to be identical; not the food ( which is uniformly outstanding, new ideas are tried often, try the specials ), not the service ( food arrival wait times can vary depending on the strain to the staff but dammit, these people really care ), not the decor ( holiday/sports/special event themes are fun, also ...think Bogie/Bacall in the film Key Largo, except with a few left over Chinese accents and a lot of well placed LCD/plasma T.V.'s ). Clearly ( the not being identical part ) is by design, and here's why... Boomerangs NEVER will : (1) serve up bland corporate food...or (2) pour uninspired drink choices ( so many beers, so little time )...or (3) force striped uniforms with insufficient "flair" on the staff. What you CAN count on: Diners here will have a great time and pocket another quality memory. Seriously, the build- your -own burger options (almost confounding ), menu selection ( my God, those SIDES ) and the ever changing cheesecake denouement ( by Jose ) are downright inspired. If your expectations are ever not met in some small way ( hey, it can happen anywhere ) on any visit then perhaps you also need a large enough data set to realize just what a treasure this place is in otherwise staid Clairemont. If you love this place as much as I do, then join me for additional research. I, among many, will continue to come back for more.

This is the BEST neighborhood burger joint in San Diego. It even beats ROCKY's of Crown Point!!! This place has so many different flavor combinations for their burgers. You choose the add ins and they grill you up a little slice of tasty heaven! The add in ingredients are fresh and high quality and they have a range of sauces and toppings - I recommend the habanero ketchup!!!! Also, I tried my first Pomegranate Margharita Martini - and I am now officially addicted. The owners are relaxed and fun and they make you feel like the bar is as much yours as it is theirs.

I was refered by another local, I always saw the sign but never tried it. The people there are cool, the burgers are amazing, and at a worthy price. I haven't had a burger stuffed with bacon and roasted garlic. Guess what? I'm hooked. Actually I'm going there in 30 mins for my lunch break. Peace! CLMT Jason
