This zoo is great. Although it is older, it meets the entertainment level expected of a city the size of Louisville. The kids had a GREAT time at the splash park!

As a local to the area I was extremely disappointed by my zoo visit today. For $15.95 a person (for basic admission) and a $5 parking fee for a half-empty parking lot, me and a friend got to enjoy a zoo filled with sleeping animals and empty exhibits. At least one third of the exhibits were inhabited by temporarily closed or birds are gone for winter signs in the middle of April. If not a sign, many exhibits were painted over glass or boarded over with plywood. Most all of the interactive exhibits were not working and even some the non-interactives were not working or gone altogether. The only reason I wanted to go to the zoo today was to feed the lorikeets in the Lorikeet Landing exhibit, an interactive parrot-feeding exhibit. By the time I got there at 1:30pm (regular hours 10-5pm) they were done selling nectar and were going to close the exhibit at 2pm. I understand that sleeping, tamed zoo animals are a given in some zoos and no animal can live in a cage all year 'round but if you insist on only two third of your exhibits filled then you shouldn't be charging full price. Certainly not for $15.95. Certainly not adding a $5 parking fee. This trip was a serious waste of my time and money.

I used to love going to the zoo in Louisville. My children love going to the zoo. We went to the zoo in Cincinnati last year and I was amazed at how much more room all of the animals are given there. The gorillas are not behind glass enclosures, but more like the lion attration in Louisville, where they have room to live. I took my daughter to the Louisville Zoo about 5 months later and noticed the difference in the temperment of the animals in the two zoos. The orangatange looked lethargic and at times angry as did the gorillas. The polar bear attraction is small and dangerous. After the past 6 months at the Louisville Zoo, there have been numerous signs pointing to the fact that the animals are not provided proper living quarters nor are the attractions well maintained, (ie the train derailing). When my daughter asks me if we can go to the zoo, I will spend the extra 2 hours driving to Cincinatti so we can see animals in a more natural habitat and leave knowing that we felt as good going to the zoo there, as the animals feel being there for us to enjoy.
